The supply chain starts upstream with petrochemical feedstocks (ethylene from naphtha or ethane cracking and cyclic olefin intermediates derived from dicyclopentadiene or norbornene chemistry), followed by polymerization carried out by major chemical producers such as TOPAS Advanced Polymers, Zeon Corporation, and Mitsui Chemicals, which manufacture COC resin. Midstream, specialized film converters process the resin into films using extrusion or biaxial orientation (BOC) technologies to enhance barrier and mechanical properties. Downstream, COC films are supplied to industries such as medical and pharmaceutical packaging (blister packs, diagnostic chips), electronics (optical films, display substrates), and food packaging (high-barrier transparent films), where performance consistency and purity are critical.
