Acrylate rubber (ACM) is a type of synthetic rubber polymerized from acrylate monomers (such as butyl butyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate). Its main characteristics are excellent high-temperature resistance, oil resistance, oxidation resistance, and ozone resistance, but its elasticity is relatively low. Due to its good resistance to swelling and stability against mineral oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, and various solvents, it is widely used in automotive, machinery, and industrial sealing applications.
The upstream sector mainly includes suppliers of acrylate monomers (such as butyl acrylate and butyl methacrylate), polymerization auxiliaries, initiators, and solvents. These raw materials determine the heat resistance, oil resistance, and low-temperature performance of the rubber. The midstream sector involves the polymerization and processing of acrylate rubber, including emulsion polymerization or solution polymerization to prepare rubber preforms, and then using extrusion, calendering, or molding processes to produce various rubber products. Rubber properties can be controlled through copolymerization, compounding, and crosslinking technologies. Downstream applications cover automotive seals (oil seals, O-rings, hydraulic hose sleeves), mechanical equipment seals, fuel and hydraulic system fittings, and electronic insulation components. Automotive and industrial seals represent the largest and fastest-growing application area, placing stringent requirements on the rubber's high-temperature resistance, oil resistance, and aging resistance.
In 2025, global acrylate rubber sales reached 221,000 tons, with a production capacity of approximately 340,000 tons, an average selling price of US$5,900 per ton, and an average gross profit margin of 22%-28%.
Acrylate rubber is primarily used in automotive seals, piping, oil seals, and industrial protective products, exhibiting excellent high-temperature and oil resistance. The trend towards lightweighting in automobiles and higher engine temperatures, particularly the growing demand for thermal management in electric vehicles and seals for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, is driving the expansion of the acrylic rubber market. Demand for heat-resistant seals in industrial machinery, building piping, and electronics is also a growth driver, with the Asia-Pacific region experiencing the fastest growth, fueled by the expansion of manufacturing in China and India.
Technologically, acrylic rubber primarily utilizes free radical polymerization or controlled polymerization techniques. Formulations are optimized for temperature, oil, and aging resistance through comonomers and plasticizers. Emerging trends include improved low-temperature flexibility, enhanced flame retardancy, and composite applications with fluororubber or silicone rubber to meet high-performance sealing and extreme operating conditions. Furthermore, research and development of environmentally friendly plasticizers to replace traditional phthalates is underway.
The main substitution risks come from fluororubber (FKM), silicone rubber (VMQ), and high-performance thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), but due to price and property differences, acrylic rubber still maintains its advantage in high-temperature oil seals and automotive seals. The overall outlook is promising, especially with continued demand being released in applications such as electric vehicles, aviation, and high-end industrial equipment.
